What Is a Behavioral Support Plan (BSP) in Residential Care?

A Behavioral Support Plan (BSP) is the written roadmap that guides how staff respond to a resident's behavior. Here's what a BSP contains, who develops it, and why faithful daily implementation matters.

What a BSP Includes

A BSP documents the function of specific behaviors, antecedent strategies (what to change before a behavior occurs), reinforcement plans for replacement skills, and consistent staff responses to incidents. It is individualized - no two BSPs are alike.

The plan also defines data collection methods so the care team can measure whether interventions are working objectively, not by anecdote.

Who Develops the BSP

A BSP is typically authored by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or licensed behavior specialist, based on a functional behavior assessment. The resident's DDA case manager, family, and the residential provider collaborate on implementation.

Avenue Home does not write the BSP - we implement it faithfully, collect the data the BCBA needs, and report back so the plan can be refined.

Why Daily Implementation Matters

A BSP only works if every staff member, on every shift, responds consistently. A home that applies reinforcement strategies during waking hours but reverts to untrained responses overnight undermines the entire plan and can escalate behaviors.

This is why ABA-informed training across all shifts - including awake overnight staff - is a non-negotiable for residents with behavioral support needs.
